Building a Democratic School Study Visit to Turkey Report

The visit was hosted by Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education Project “Generation Democracy”, implemented by the Council of Europe. Its aim is to ensure that differences are locally, nationally, regionally and internationally recognised and embraced at the social level. The Study Visit started in Edirne with a welcome presentation at the Provincial Directorate of Education, with the presence of the pilot school directors. After the presentation of the agenda by the CoE Project Team, the participating teachers were divided into two groups, each accompanied by the project representatives. They visited LalaªahinPaºa Primary School and Kurtuluº Primary School were they could observe live teaching process in some classes and familiarise with schools’ work, as well as exchange, compare and discuss their experiences with the schools’ teachers. The following day was reserved for the city of Konya where the group was hosted by Mareºal Mustafa Kemal Middle School. There the teachers had a chance to observesome subject oriented classes and later discuss their experience at the meeting with the school’s teachers, as well as familiarise with the functioning of the school related to inclusive education and work with children with special educational needs. After the school visit a meeting was scheduledat the Konya Educational Provincial Directorate where the participants got an insight into their work and dealing with various factors which affect the realisation of the “Generation Democracy” project.
The Study Visit was concluded in Ankara with two meetings scheduled.
The first meeting was held at the Board of Education. The participants were introduced to the Turkish education system and presented inclusive approach in Turkish textbooks and “Democratic Innovation Award”. The presentation was followed by an interactive Q&A session.
The second meeting took place at the Ankara Council of Europe Office where the participants were welcomed by Mr. Michael Ingledow. The participants exchanged their opinions on what they had experienced during the time spent in Turkey. They summarised and gave feedback on the Study Visit, and the general conclusion was that they all learned something from it which can be put to use in their own working environment. |

Fourteen primary school teachers from the South East Europe region participated in a study visit to Turkey on 16-20 March to learn more about inclusive cultures, policies and practices with a focus on building a democratic school culture as a pre-requisite for an inclusive school. The participating teachers came from schools which are part of the “Regional Support for Inclusive Education” joint programme by the Council of Europe and European Union.Each project partner country (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Kosovo) had two representative teachers from one of their pilot inclusive schools.
